Nam Định is located in the southern central part of the Red River Delta, about 100 km northeast of Hanoi city center. It plays a gateway role in facilitating the circulation of goods from the North to the Central provinces through a synchronous transportation system, such as the North-South unified railway, national highways including Highway 10, Highway 12, Highway 21, and Highway 38. Along with these advantages, Nam Định is also planned by the Government to become the textile and garment center of the North, so in recent years Nam Định has experienced strong industrial development.

As of September 2018, Nam Định has 9 IPs with a total area of 2,000 ha; including 4 IPs that have come into operation, namely Hoa Xá IP, Mỹ Trung IP, Bảo Minh IP, and Rạng Đông Textile and Garment IP (Aurora IP). With 98 FDI projects, the total registered capital is nearly 3.3 billion USD.
